Chance

My phone wakes me up at a little after ten in the morning. Fuck! Who the hell is calling me this early? I didn’t get to bed until after four. It was my night to close the bar since Jackson has been covering my shifts all week so I could be at the clinic during the day and evening with Rissa and Olive.

“Hello?” I answer without looking at who is calling.

“Chance?” Rissa’s voice flows into my ears, instantly waking me up.

“Rissa? Is everything okay?” I ask sitting up in bed, praying all is good. Olive was doing better yesterday morning.

“Yeah, everything is good. I got the results back from the test and Olive doesn’t have parvo, and since she’s eating more consistently, I figured maybe we could release her.” There’s a pause in her voice.

“Oh, wow. That’s great news. I mean, I’m glad she’s doing better,” I reply at the same time a realization hits me. I wonder if this means I won’t see Rissa anymore. The past week or so has been so much fun. I swear she is meant for me. I know it’s weird to think that after a week, I’d know, but maybe I am starting to believe in all that voodoo taffy bullshit.

“Chance? You still there?” I hear her ask.

“Yeah. I’m here. When do you want me to get her? You sure she’s okay to be released?”

“Yes. There’s nothing I’m going to do now that you can’t,” Rissa replies. A shudder flows through my body.

“Great. I’ll be down in a little while.” I hang up the phone wondering what this means for us.

Me: Rissa said I can pick up the dog. She’s okay to be released.

Kensley: That’s great, but I sense something’s wrong.

Me: Why do you say that?

Kensley: Because you’re texting me...

Me: Well, my brother might make fun of me.

Kensley: Spill it.

Me: I can’t help but wonder if I won’t see Rissa again. I mean there’s no reason now for me to drop by...

Kensley: Why can’t you just drop by because you like her?

Me: What if she doesn’t like me? What if she doesn’t want to hang out?

Kensley: Are you serious with this right now? You, of all people, are worried?

Me: What does that mean?

Kensley: Come on Chance. Anyone can see she likes you. How about you ask her out? You know, like normal people.

Me: I curse you and your voodoo taffy...just saying.

Kensley: Nope, you can curse Grams for that. I’m just continuing the tradition. I thought you didn’t buy into that shit? Your words.

Me: I might start believing...

Kensley: Well, don’t stop believing...

Me: Seriously? I’m not ready for Journey this early in the morning.

Kensley: Don’t be a chick, just ask her out.

Me: Fine. Remind me why I ask you anything.

Kensley: You love me?

Me: Debatable.

Kensley: I’m going to be the best sister-in-law ever!

Me: Again debatable. Gotta run.

Kensley: We’ll swing by later to see Ms. Olive.

Me: Whatever.

I throw my phone on the bed and rub my face. I need a shower and a cup of coffee before I can go deal with this shit.
